Mad Monday: NBL excitement growing

GARY Ervin is excited about the talent level in the 2013-14 NBL, whether we’re talking James Ennis or Stephen Dennis.

The league’s 2011 MVP also likes the way his new club, Adelaide 36ers, are taking shape.

“I think if we don’t have injuries, we’ll have a really good season,” Ervin said.

Finals has eluded Adelaide’s GE – the man who will Generate Electricity for the Sixers this season.

“It was a tough season with Townsville,” he said, the Crocs battling to make it back from a season-burying 0-10 start, Ervin winning club MVP honors.

“And we were unlucky (at Wollongong) where we wound up missing the finals (in 2011) by one game after we had a lot of injuries.”

Ervin and Jarrid Frye are the 36ers’ new import faces, Ennis at Perth, Dennis and Scott Morrison at Melbourne, Jesse Sanders and Charles Carmouche at Sydney, Darnell Lazare and Kerron Johnson at NZ Breakers, Josh Pace and Brian Conklin at Townsville and Rotnei Clarke at Wollongong.

Jamar Wilson will be back at Cairns and there are still three more imports to come.

AUGUST is winding to a close and it has been a big month for our favorite basketballing Brads.

Well-travelled Brad Hill is going to a SEABL Grand Final with Mount Gambier Pioneers.

Dual-Olympian Brad Newley has married long-time love Brigid Bowley.

Popular player and now coach Brad Davidson has had two additions to his family with wife Megan and son Cooper. This week they revealed the safe arrival of fraternal twins - Finn Porter Davidson (5lb 8oz - 2490g; 42.5cm long) and Zara Lisa Davidson (5lb 6oz - 2440g; 45.5cm long).

They were born two minutes apart with a perfect, calm birth.

Congratulations to all three. Brad Pitt and Bradley Cooper send their regards.

CANDACE Parker scored with 5.7 seconds left in the second overtime to take the Los Angeles Sparks to a hard-fought 90-88 comeback victory over Tulsa Shock today.

Parker finished with 26 points and 11 rebounds, driving past Tiffany Jackson-Jones from the right side for the winning basket.

Tulsa's Riquna Williams’ 23-foot jumper rimmed out and Nneka Ogwumike rebounded the miss as time expired.

The Sparks (19-8) blew away a 19-point fourth quarter deficit to move one game behind Minnesota for first place in the Western Conference.

Ogwumike finished with 21 points but Tulsa’s chances took a hit when our gal Liz Cambage left the game with a sprained left ankle with 6:35 to go in the fourth.

THE medal winners have been decided for another year in SA basketball, a late entry for the annual “Vikki Kelson Best Outfit” award by Tess Madgen the clear winner.

Here’s how we recorded the individual wins today: http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/sport/sixers-star-daniel-johnson-breaks-a-30year-drought-back-to-leroy-loggins-by-winning-the-woollacott-medal-for-west-adelaide/story-fnia3gmi-1226704031903  and http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/sport/basketball/foley-and-johnson-clean-up-state8217s-top-individual-basketball-honours/story-fnii09ki-1226703787091  in case you missed them.

SIXERS coach Joey Wright is impressed with the physicality BJ Anthony brings to the NBL outfit and also with DJ's increased physical play.

In an overdue salute to the late great EJ Whitten, wouldn't it be a treat if AJ Ogilvy wandered into a 36ers' session with CJ Bruton.

If AJ, BJ, CJ and DJ were as good as EJ, they could upgrade on his FJ.

Yeah. I need an OJ.
