NBL, sleeping giant or just sleeping?

NOT sure if anyone is awake at the NBL just now – winter is a time of hibernation after all – but isn’t it starting to get late to announce Blitz details?

I mean, it is set for September 19-21 which is roughly a month from now.

Unless the NBL plans to make a proper hash of it in the same way BA did a few years back when it tried to run the preseason tournament in Brisbane, it is time the league got the lead out.

If the plan is to take NBL basketball back to Brisbane to cultivate interest ahead of a return to the league by a team in the Queensland state capital for 2015-16, then making the Blitz a success should be an equally high priority.

Breaking the news it is in Brisbane from September 19-21 should already have officially been done.

Sponsors should be being announced, not still being pursued, and a plan revealed of how the league plans to maximise media exposure.

Lord knows this site already has tossed them enough ideas, from getting the word out early (clearly ignored) to getting the games videotaped to provide action footage for potential TV spots.

Or the NBL can just repeat the same blasé approach BA did when it ran the show and hope that by staging the Blitz in Brisbane, maybe someone might show up.

Get the lead out NBL.

If you can gather staff not too busy promoting other sports in their apparently abundant “spare time”, how about a concerted effort to make the Loggins-Bruton Trophy tournament in the city they both debuted and won titles in, a shining success?

The world at large is waiting to get on board so maybe set an alarm, get up, get busy and get the word out.

PERTH finally this week announced its NBA-bound import for its title defence is DeAndre Daniels.

It seems Wildcats coach Trevor Gleeson, currently away with the Boomers, is so delighted, he has Daniels filling the bill on many counts.

Gleeson told the media this week: “We wanted someone athletic who can play above the rim and someone who can shoot from the perimeter, and he ticks both those boxes.”

Or all three?

Athletic.

Plays above the rim.

Shoot from the perimeter.

Ticks all three boxes?

Maybe two is worth three in the metric system Trev currently is working in on the Continent.

36ERS coach Joey Wright was pretty dazzled with Melbourne United’s prospects this season after Friday’s tight 93-101 preseason loss in Ballarat.

And he is very impressed with “marquee man” Daniel Kickert.

He said plenty for me at News Corp tomorrow.

I’ll throw up the link when it’s available but Joey has Melbourne majorly in title contention.

United is on the move.

Believe that.
