NBL stars abound in NZ Final Four

THE New Zealand NBL Final Four tips off tomorrow with a big cast of NBL stars involved and potential new faces for our 2015-16 tip-off.

First-placed Southland Sharks, on a 14-game winning streak, face the Supercity Rangers in one semi final, the winner advancing to Sunday’s Grand Final.

They’ll meet the winner of the Nelson Giants-Wellington Saints semi, which also should be a thriller.

Under Paul Henare’s mentorship, the Sharks have proven the most clinical side in the comp, twice beating the Rangers during the regular season, with forward Tai Wesley enjoying an MVP-type year.

Wesley is averaging 18.1 points at 66 per cent, and 9.4 rebounds but will have his hands full with forward Tom Garlepp, who is delivering 20.7ppg.

Garlepp and his Sydney Kings teammate Jason Cadee (22.6) and Breakers swingman Reuben Te Rangi (20.5) give the Rangers three players averaging more than 20 points.

Breakers’ inaugural NBL-championship winning import Kevin Braswell, at 36, led Southland to its first title in 2013 and will go head-to-head with tyro Cadee.

Cadee comes in off a 40-point haul against Taranaki, and in his past two games is averaging a whopping 37.5 points.

Former Townsville Croc and now Melbourne United swingman Todd Blanchfield has led Southland with 21.8ppg and Tai Wesley is hauling in 9.4 boards per night, much of the reason the Sharks are on their winning roll.

Imports Torrey Craig (Saints) and McKenzie Moore (Giants) hold the key in the other semi final.

Craig, a key player in Cairns Taipans’ NBL Grand Final run, is averaging 22.6ppg and 9.9rpg for the Saints while Moore – who is scoring 22.4ppg - will keenly be observed by Townsville Crocodiles coach Shawn Dennis for a potential NBL import slot.

Crocs forward Leon Henry (Saints) also will play a key role.

This is the fifth time the Giants and Saints have fought out a semi final since 2008, Nelson so far only winning once.

But Nelson has a much more balanced roster this season with the additions of Sydney Kings free agent centre Josh Duinker, import DeRonn Scott and multiple NBL title-winner Mika Vukona.

Phillll Jones, at 411111, er, 41, possibly is in his last championship run for Nelson.
