NBL TotW1: Kings settle back on the throne

IT looked like it may have been Perth after it saw off a tenacious Tasmania, then Melbourne with its first round sweep of SEM and Adelaide. But ultimately, our Round 1 Team of the Week was the defending champion Sydney Kings.

A new coach, a new starting five, in the building of a hostile derby neighbour … yet it was a comfortable win with so many contributors that when injured DJ Hogg (shoulder) makes it back, slotting him into the rotation will be a challenge.

But what a good one to have!

SEM was insipid against Melbourne but wicked against Perth, leaving the Kings out on their own as the round’s most impressive team.

OK, yes. New Zealand also came under consideration but the Breakers were at home and against a depleted opponent.

And Melbourne only did as much as was required to beat Adelaide so, no, wasn’t as impressive as it will be.

But Sydney’s comfortable 96-81 win was a masterclass in playing together, utilising your strengths while also knowing Jonah Bolden is going to get better and DJ Hogg is waiting in the wings.
