NBL TotW12: Who owns Christmas bragging rights?

WITH so many games across the Christmas break - and Round 13 already underway tonight - separating teams to come up with a Round 12 Team of the Week was no mean feat, especially when quite a few teams split results, unfortunate in one game, then excellent in the other. Cairns, SEM, Illawarra, Perth, Tasmania - they all fit that bill.

But, of course, the blemish cancels the brilliant, which is truly is a shame for South East Melbourne and Illawarra in particular.

The Phoenix were horrid in Cairns, then may have had their game of the year in Hobart against Tasmania.

Illawarra lost to Tasmania at home, but then turned around and unseated the Kings from their Sydney throne, Lachlan Olbrich announcing his arrival as a genuine star of the future.

Then there were the "single game" winners who only suited once in the round, namely Melbourne and Adelaide.

United staged one of the grandest regular season spectacles and events of the year with their open roof match against Perth at John Cain Arena.

Not only was it an exceptionally delivered brilliant night of entertainment, but the match went into overtime before Melbourne held off Perth 109-103.

The stars were not only in the house but also in the night sky as stellar American guards Bryce Cotton and Ian Clark put on a show worthy of the capacity 10,175 in attendance.

In Adelaide, the 36ers won their first game under new coach Scott Ninnis, beating Brisbane from go-to-whoa, with the Bullets firing back several times but unable to shake the sheer will of the Sixers' roster, led by Jacob Wiley.

It was an inspired performance which put the Round 8 winners right back under the spotlight.

Ultimately though, New Zealand backed up Round 11's stellar effort with twin wins, at home and on the road, and both against teams which will be battling for top six placings.

The Breakers cut down Sydney in no uncertain fashion, then went to Brisbane and again had too many weapons for the Bulletheads.

Will McDowell-White found his touch, Zylan Cheatham slammed the door shut on Brisbane, and Anthony Lamb continued to show how lucky the Breakers were in picking him up for injured Justinian Jessup.

Dane Pineau also shone, Mantas Rubstavicius another major plus. So yes, it's back-to-back for the Breakers as our NBL team of the Week. And there's a few clubs out there very worried with what they're seeing.

Our Team of the Weak As Pi$$ was a tough one after Sydney capitulated to New Zealand, then had its owner shoot his mouth off before copping some broken teeth from Illawarra.

But really, could we go past Brisbane? Humbled in Adelaide, they then helped New Zealand find its best form while the Bullets were busy shuffling the deck chairs on the Titanic, Justin Schueller's substitution pattern something of a mystery to behold.

There's talent here, but knowing how to use it? Nup. Brisbane was as Weak as Pi$$.
