Neill in Brisbane as deadlines approach

NBL chief executive Fraser Neill is in Brisbane as you read this - unless you're reading it in a week's time - to help shore up plans for a locally-based club in the 2015-16 season.

"Brisbane will definitely have an NBL team - absolutely," he again declared when we spoke earlier today.

Asked whether he was in the Queensland capital to meet with basketball or business people, Neill said: "I'm up here to meet with business people, yes.

"These are people who want to get involved but at this point, do not necessarily want that involvement to be public knowledge."

The CEO remains unequivocal Brisbane will be playing in the NBL next season and that his league was "running parallel" with interest groups and would go it alone, if necessary, to ensure the city had a big league presence.

Potential teams representing Tasmania and a second club out of Melbourne also were well-advanced in their planning, with a final decision on the NBL's 2015-16 make-up expected by the end of November.

"There will be one-to-three new teams (in 2015-16)," he said, ruling out a second New Zealand entity in the first bout of expansion.

Long-established NZ NBL club Wellington Saints previously have indicated an interest in participating in the NBL.

"A second New Zealand team won't happen before 2016-17," Neill said.

"As for Tassie or Melbourne, we don't want to go out early without everything nailed down."

Neill declared at the closing presentations of the Blitz tournament in Brisbane in September that the city again would have an NBL club next season but it is understandable fans are getting antsy, given the lack of any subsequent detail.
