Oceania beckons NBA Aussie

PATTY Mills has every intention of suiting for Andrej Lemanis' Boomers in the Oceania Series against New Zealand, despite missing the rest of the NBA Championship series with a foot injury.

Patty, who scored for San Antonio against Miami in Games 2 and 3 after getting late-game minutes, was in his street clothes for Games 4 and 5 after minor surgery to remove an abscess between the fourth and fifth toes of his right foot.

"That'll be right," he told me from Miami today where the Spurs are preparing for Game 6 against the Heat tomorrow.

As for suiting against the Tall Blacks?

"I've definitely put my hand up for it," he said.

"One of those games is in Canberra and I've never had a chance before to play for Australia in front of my home crowd."

The match is on Sunday, August 18.

Patty also spoke about the NBA playoffs, his future, towel-waving and the Crows, some of which you can catch later today at www.adelaidenow.com.au and the rest later this week.

HEARTS and best wishes of the entire basketball community go out to Mirko Djeric, shot in the right thigh by gate-crashers at a party on Friday night in Sydney's western suburbs.

In a statement, Mirko's manager, Bruce Kaider said: "Our understanding, at this early stage, is that Mirko unfortunately was at the wrong place at the wrong time. Our focus right now is to ensure the wellbeing of him and his family.

"The incident is currently being investigated by the police and as such we are not in a position to make any further comments."

Mirko was due to leave shortly with the Australian Under 19 Basketball team for the World Championships in the Czech Republic. Basketball Australia will announce his replacement later this week.

"Basketball Australia is offering every support to Mirko and his family during this time," BA CEO Kristrina Keneally said.

GOT to say, it never ceases to amaze me just how far we have either fallen off the mainstream media or how little research it does.

The original story of the shooting had Mirko playing last season with Illawarra Hawks and looking for a contract in Europe.

Yes, the article meant WOLLONGONG Hawks (this isn't 1979 is it?) and had no clue he had signed for two years with Townsville Crocodiles.

It's a worry.

But then, so is the NBL website.

VERY unusual stat from Albury-Wodonga's 76-67 SEABL win over Knox Raiders at the weekend.

Of Knox's 67 points, more than half - 34 - came from the free throw line.

The Raiders only hit 16 shots from the floor, compared to the Bandits' 31.

Albury-Wodonga went to the stripe hitting 11-of-17. CJ Massingale hit 16-of-17 by himself for Knox.

The Raiders' 34-of-37 free throws - on the road - was a pretty interesting effort.

AWKWARD. Amateur hour. Horrendous. Disgraceful.

Pick one and I will go along with it because I too have a confession to make.

I had real trouble dealing with the TV coverage/commentary of the Boomers' Game 4 loss 81-88 to China in the Australia-Sino Challenge.

While it was broadcast on Fox, it is clear this was NOT done by Fox Sports and was simply not fit for television - pay-TV or free-to-air.

(No. Maybe it would have been OK for public access TV ... barely.)

Yes, I know we never seem to be pleased out here in the real world (where some of us actually believe in the product) and we probably should be grateful for the inferior graphics and juvenile calling.

A "triple-pointer"?? Good lordy. Don't give up your day jobs fellas.

Boomers rookie Cam Bairstow continued his impressive debut with a team-high 15 points, Cam Gliddon added 13 points - Cam Tovey and Cam Tragardh left to wonder why they weren't selected.

Adam Gibson had 12 points on 4-of-5 from three-point range and Chris Goulding also had 13.

But please, get some pros on it next time.

MELBOURNE Tigers have a two-day Junior Camp for boys and girls of beginner-to-intermediate level aged between six and 13 coming up at GESAC, the Glen Eira Sports and Aquatic Centre in Bentleigh East.

Kids will not only have the chance to play basketball games and learn skills but also have opportunities for autographs and photos with some of the Tigers' pro players.

Think you might be missing out? There's more Tigers activities at Boroondara in Balwyn North, Whitten Oval Sports Hall in Footscray and at Keilor Stadium so go hit the Tigers' website now for more information.

THE Wollongong Roller Hawks' have started their bid for a threepeat in the 2013 National Wheelchair Basketball League, the season tipping off last weekend.

Adelaide Thunder, Be Active Perth Wheelcats, RSL Queensland Spinning Bullets, Sydney Uni WheelKings and Victoria are the teams trying to wrest the title from the Hawks.

Good to see south Queensland represented.

Basketball Australia Chief Executive Officer Kristina Keneally said the NWBL played a big role in underpinning the success of the Rollers on the Paralympic stage.

"This season promises to deliver high-quality competition and a chance for the Wollongong Roller Hawks to make history by winning three-consecutive NWBL titles," BACEOKK said.
