Opals to take crack at China tonight

AUSTRALIA's Opals take on China tonight in a KO quarter-final of the FIBA Women's World Cup in Tenerife, Spain and will start heavy favourites.

They did not cross swords at last year's FIBA Asia Cup where the Aussies won Silver and China took Bronze but met last in the quarter-finals of the London Olympics in 2012 where the Opals advanced with a 75-60 cruise.

The match will be televised live tonight on FOX SPORTS from 11pm AEST (10.30pm SA & NT) with the Opals looking at a semi final showdown against the winner of the Spain-Canada quarter.

Liz Cambage has been the championship's dominant force, averaging 27.7ppg at 72.3 percent to lead the Worlds, the Opals 3-0 and winning Group B by an average of 28.4 points.

It was impressive stuff and Afrobasket champion Nigeria, which lost to the Aussies by 18, KO'd Greece 57-56 to reach a quarter-final meeting with favourite USA.

China, which pushed the USA to an 88-100 result, solved a seven-year riddle against Japan 87-81 to reach tonight's square-off with the Opals.

The only question over the Aussies is whether captain Jenna O'Hea (calf strain) will take the court after being sidelined until now.
