Our first five reflects so well on the game in Oz

THEY did it! Penny Taylor and Erin Phillips today joined Patty Mills, Aron Baynes and Joe Ingles as players to win Championships at the highest club levels in the world this year.

No, I haven't forgotten what Sandy Bondello has achieved either as coach of the Phoenix Mercury which motored through the WNBA regular season winning a record 29 games before dismissing all comers to claim the club's third title in the world's premier women's basketball competition.

Today's 87-82 Game 3 win over Chicago Sky - in Chicago and without star centre and game-changer Brittney Griner (eye injury) - completed a 3-0 series sweep in the best-of-five Championship.

It gave Taylor her third WNBA crown with the Mercury and Phillips her second Championship and first with the Mercury after winning with Indiana Fever in 2012.

Add that success to Mills and Baynes winning the NBA Championship this year with San Antonio Spurs, and Ingles claiming the Euroleague Championship with Maccabi Tel Aviv and it is easy to understand why basketball is booming again in Australia.

Yes, that's without even mentioning Dante Exum's No.5 NBA draft selection this year by Utah Jazz, or Cam Bairstow also being picked up by the storied Chicago Bulls. Or talking about our Under-17 men's team's Silver Medal success ... oh wait, I did mention them!

The question remains though, is the message getting out there?

Ahead of the Opals' World Championship campaign - sure to be buoyed with the twin additions of Penny and Erin - and NBL and WNBL seasons which have even the non-committed getting excited, is the word getting out to mainstream Oz?

You know about it and I do but if you're reading this, you already are into basketball.

Who of your friends who isn't into our sport knows about these outrageous and continuous successes?

Over to you Basketball Australia.

Get the word out. Spread the Gospel.

The mainstream sporting world needs to know about this so strike while the iron is hot.

Bombard TV, radio, newspapers, the Internet, social media with news of what Sandy, Penny and Erin achieved today ... before it gets lost amid the footy finals and the Spring Racing Season.

There's no time like the present!
