Pac-12 AllStars forget their role

SOMEONE forgot to tell the Pac-12 AllStars they were supposed to be playing the Washington Generals to the Boomers' Harlem Globetrotters last night at Hisense Arena.

Those pesky kids kept coming back and trying to make a game of it before Australia - down Matthew Dellavedova (NBA insurance issues), Andrew Bogut (knee) and Chris Goulding (ankle, precautionary), then Ryan Broekhoff after just 10:12 of action with an ankle injury - saw them off 92-83.

But let's not over-react.

This was the "new Boomers" first hit-out as the team for Rio so starting a little tentatively and lacking some sync was to be expected.

The college kids just had a red-hot go and kept coming until the end which, after all, is what the Boomers needed, given no national team took up the invitation to play this Farewell Series.

So while initially it was the Pac-12 announcing "Hello World", once the rhythm started to come, Australia's men were too physical and experienced.

They trailed by seven at one stage and led by 18 at another, dominating the middle stages of the contest and especially after halftime when a 10-0 run pushed the Boomers to 60-48 and on their way to out of reach.

Aron Baynes was a keyway monster - the haircut adds to the persona - for 28 points and nine rebounds. Baynes also has better range than advertised.

Australia's 52-34 rebound disparity also was a huge factor, Patty Mills sticking a couple of sweet buckets and slick assists and David Andersen such a reliable asset.

“Defensively we had some issues in the first half with their speed and ability to get to the rim," Boomers coach Andrej Lemanis said.

“The guys came out and made some adjustments and offensively we had some nice execution.

“I don’t want to get caught up in the negatives, we have only been together for a week and this group of 12 has only practiced together once.”

Kevin Lisch was a standout with his work rate at both ends of the floor and his smarts. What a boost he is going to provide in Rio.

Broekhoff was warming into the game when he rolled his left ankle and while initial prognosis is it won't be serious, he will miss tomorrow's rematch.

Goulding will come in and also, hopefully, Dellavedova for that game.

Kadeem Allen had 12 of his 15 in the first half for the AllStars, Lorenzo Bonam, Dorian Pickens and Tra Holder also with their moments.

The Pac-12 stuck 11-of-23 threes, were fun to watch and tenacious with it. But talking tenacity, loved what Damian Martin brought too.

He had no hesitation in taking an early open three and even though it didn't drop, he hustled up a steal and assist to Andersen within a further few seconds, creating opportunities as he always does.

The Boys for Brazil are rolling.

FOOTNOTE QUESTIONS

How much fun is it to see Australia's two 7-foot NBA champions, Luc Longley and Andrew Bogut, chatting to one side at the game?

GOOD CALL: Chris Anstey and Dwayne Russell on the Fox Sports commentary

Should Fox Sports get Dwayne Russell a box to stand on for the banter-shots with Chris Anstey?

Does Chris Goulding, sitting on the bench alongside Matthew Dellavedova and Andrew Bogut feel a bit like Luc Longley did back when he was joking on the Bulls bench with Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen?

Can you picture what a difference Bogey would make, anchoring the middle of that Boomers' defence and facilitating the offence in Rio? Exciting, isn't it?
