Sapphires make it an intra-group sweep
TweetAUSTRALIA’s Sapphires tonight completed a sweep of intra-pool play by winning Group C at the FIBA World U17 Championship in the Czech Republic.
Bride Kennedy-Hopoate led the Aussies with 10 points as they brushed aside an aggressive Mexico 64-42.
“Hard to imagine a more physical game than that,” Sapphires assistant coach Simon Pritchard tweeted post-game, 25 fouls called on the Mexicans and Australia shooting 28 free throws.
Anneli Maley again was a boards monster with 11 as Australia dominated the glass, snaring 50 rebounds to 25.
An emphatic 18-6 final period in a 37-17 second half avalanche put away any shadow of a doubt as Australia made it 3-0 in intra-pool play, having previously stopped Japan 54-46 and Slovakia 58-51.
TOMORROW: Come time travelling to the 36ers' Invincibles' year in 1986 as they take on those Hawks of the Illawarra.
