Simon Says: Curry still super hot

THE NBA season is in full swing, and what a start to the season it’s been both individually and for a couple of the heavyweight teams.

It’s hard to go past the game’s best player Steph Curry and his defending champion Golden State Warriors as the story to start the season.

Make no mistake, right now Curry is THE best player in basketball. Unstoppable. Unguardable. The 6-3 guard has taken his amazing three-point shooting range and seemingly added to it – there’s nowhere on the floor he’s not dangerous from.

His 33 points a game leads the NBA, and he’s shooting at 53% from the floor, 47% from three and 92% from the charity stripe. Throw in 5.3 rebounds and 5.6 assists a game and you’ve got a complete player.

All that would mean nothing, of course, if his team wasn’t winning. But it is.

No-one has been able to stop the Warriors through their first 10 games of the season, a record streak for the franchise to start a season. It’s an ominous warning to all-comers – the defending champions mean business again.

The emergence of Detroit Pistons big-man Andre Drummond has been another phenomenal story to start the season.

The 6-11, 22-year-old has had three 20-20 game, becoming the first player to score 135 points and nab 135 rebounds through seven games since one of the all-time greats Wilt Chamberlain performed it in 1970-71.

The Pistons, who this season acquired Aussie Aron Baynes from San Antonio, surprised early in the East starting 5-1 with solid wins at Atlanta, at home to Chicago and a remarkable come-from-behind win over Portland, before dropping their last three.

It looks like Stan van Gundy might be starting to weave some magic with his blue-collar outfit.

While Curry and the Warriors have been making the most headlines, a guy by the name of LeBron James has been quietly going about his business in Cleveland, the Cavs having only dropped one game through its first 10, and that was the season-opener to Chicago on a Pau Gasol blocked shot on James.

Aussie guard Matthew Dellevadova has become a really important piece off the bench for the Cavs, who are still without star point guard Kyrie Irving. His five assists a game in the early going are clearly his best career numbers as he looks to be a facilitator for his team-mates.

This week’s big games: Oklahoma City travels to Memphis on Tuesday minus Kevin Durant (hamstring). The Grizzlies have been one of the disappointments early and really need a lift from Mike Conley in the back-court, although facing a rampant Russell Westbrook – good luck.

Not surprisingly, the Warriors are involved in two huge games, firstly hosting Toronto (7-3) on Wednesday before heading to LA for a match-up against the ailing Clippers (6-4), who have toiled hard in the absence of injured guards JJ Redick and Chris Paul.

Can anyone topple the undefeated champs this week?
