Southside off to a flyer? WNBL today

DEFENDING WNBL champion Southside should have few issues opening the 2021-22 season with a solid win over last season's bomb shelter resident Bendigo today at Dandenong Stadium.

The season tips off with only two matches this weekend, Sydney Flames tomorrow hosting Canberra at Qudos Bank Arena.

That should be a cracker, the Flames young, fast, with three top 10 WNBA draft pics, Canberra recruiting Alicia Froling, set for an opening round showdown with her departed sister Keely, now a Sydney signing.

Kelsey Griffin is 100 per cent fit and that should be enough to tip the balance in the Capitals' favour. But this will be a gem.

Not quite as gleaming will be today's clash at The Aerodrome in Dandenong, where the Flyers substitute a league MVP in Abby Bishop for Liz Cambage, the Roccis provide the same double-dose once present with the Blicavs sisters-in-law, and Jenna O'Hea is directing traffic.

Expect the Flyers to soar over Bendigo which looks headed for another long season, despite recruiting Rachael Sporn Medallist Leilani Mitchell out from Southside's 2021 champion.
