Record rout as Southside wins in a flyer

THEY had the Rolls Royce of Australian basketball, then watched a Mercedes drive off with the Rachael Sporn Medal as Southside left Perth choking on its fumes in Game 3 of the WNBL Grand Final Series, the Flyers' claiming their second crown but fifth overall including their history as Dandenong Rangers.

And also for the second time, Southside captain Bec Cole was unlucky to miss on the Sporn Medal after playing a pivotal role in Games 2 and 3 against the Lynx's Game 1 star Amy Atwell to bring the Flyers the coveted championship.

But another 13-point, 13-rebound contribution from Game 2 match-winner Mercedes Russell ensured she would join teammates Leilani Mitchell (twice) and Australian basketball's G.O.A.T. Lauren Jackson (four times) as the Most Valuable Player in a Grand Final.

But rarely has that individual honour been less relevant than it was today with seven Flyers scoring in double-figures in a rout that screamed "team".

Jasmine Dickey led the scoring in both Southside wins and Carley Ernst could not have been more influential, the pair leading the way off the bench.

Mitchell's elevation mid-season into a starter's role changed the fortunes of Cheryl Chambers' team, the Flyers' "Magnificent Seven" the architects of this comeback, Maddi Rocci also improving the further the series evolved.

Losing Game 1 at home by 22 points - and that margin flattered the Flyers - they got out of jail in Perth on Russell's buzzer-beater and back at home in front of their adoring fans, they never would give Perth a sniff.

The Lynx were alive, down 27-28 at the first break but Emily Potter was never doing enough, Aari McDonald was 8-of-21 from the floor and Anneli Maley looked a player seeking redemption instead of focusing on salvaging the championship.

Having missed two free throws, a lay-up and a jump shot in the final 40 seconds of a tied ballgame in Perth, Maley was 0-of-9 today before going 2-of-14 when this was well over, trying far too hard to make amends.

But really, Perth's ineptitude falls squarely on the shoulders of coach Ryan Petrik and his assistants Brad Robbins and Nat Burton. They were the crew in charge two years ago when Perth played Melbourne Boomers for the championship.

They won Game 1 in Melbourne 98-71, then lost Game 2 at home in Perth 75-76, with Game 3 back in Melbourne. If that scenario gives you a touch of deja vu, then so should the end result, which was the Boomers flogging Perth in the decider.

Having been through this exact exultation of thrashing a team in its home, then heart-breakingly losing in your own home, Perth's coaching staff should have been better equipped to prepare their charges for what to expect today.

Instead we had a repeat of the 2021-22 Grand Final Series, clouding how well this team did to make it into the Final Four off the result of the last game of the regular season, before sweeping the defending champion Townsville.

The Lynx really produced an amazing end to the season but those who don't learn the lessons of history are doomed to repeat the same mistakes, something the Flyers picked up after being swept in last year's Grand Finals.

They never were going to lose today, draining 10-of-18 threes - Mitchell and Ernst with three apiece - shooting 53 percent overall to Perth's 37, smashing the boards 51-34.

In all the effort areas, Southside was superior, and after its 24-12 second period, it was never truly threatened, scoring 63 second-half points for a total of 115, a record score in a Grand Final game.
