Target Rio - Bogut on the way

THE Boomers are likely to name injured NBA championship-winner Andrew Bogut in the team to Rio, giving the team's 213cm centrepiece every chance to be fit in time for the Olympic Games.

In fact the Aussie camp is prepared to give the newest addition to the Dallas Mavericks' roster until upto the Boomers’ first game to prove his fitness.

Bogut, 31 and staring at his last Olympics - he is a dual-Olympian after Athens and Beijing - has been one of the most outspoken players pressing for a Gold Medal return from Rio.

He risked personal mayhem a year ago to ensure he could play through a severe back injury at the Oceania Championship against New Zealand, such was and is his commitment.

Having suffered bone-bruising to his left knee after a mid-air collision with Cleveland's JR Smith during the third quarter of the NBA championship's Game 5, Bogut since has been racing the clock to rehab and recover for Rio.

With him out, his Golden State Warriors never sufficiently recovered themselves, unprecedentedly blowing a 3-1 championship series lead in surrendering the title to the Cavaliers.

Having traded him this week, the Warriors will become more aware of the rim protection he provided and which would be a key element for the Boomers in Brazil.

The Australian camp admits Bogut is a long-shot, the injury normally taking from six-to-eight weeks to fully heal. Bogut is working well in his recovery to date.

“He is here putting in the rehab and it's responding well, but there is still a long way to go,” coach Andrej Lemanis said from the Boomers' camp in Melbourne.

The Olympic tournament rules allow teams to make changes to squads until the first day of Games basketball competition on August 6 when Australia is scheduled to face an, as yet, undetermined opponent.

“He is very realistic in terms of putting the hard work in and seeing how it progresses,” Lemanis said.

“He is smart enough to understand you cannot force these things and push them.”

HE WANTS THIS: That's Andrew Bogut in there grinning with the Boomers after qualifying.

If Bogut is named in the final 12-man team but ultimately is unable to suit, his place initially was earmarked for late-squad addition and "Bogut insurance", 211cm Aleks Maric. But that emergency 13th man too could change, depending on how this selection camp pans out.

While that hangs in abeyance, Australia's national teams received a timely boost this week with the announcement of a four-year sponsorship deal with Helloworld.

It includes naming rights to the men’s national team and the Australian Junior Championships.

Helloworld CEO Andrew Burnes said the deal was a great opportunity for both Basketball Australia and Helloworld.

“Helloworld is delighted to partner up with Basketball Australia and the Helloworld Boomers," he said. "Basketball is a popular sport for all ages in Australia and we’ve proved we can mix it with the best in the world. The Helloworld Boomers go into Rio as a real medal chance and it’s an exciting time for basketball in Australia."

Helloworld Limited is a leading Australian-based travel distribution company, comprising retail travel businesses, destination management services (inbound) air ticket consolidation, wholesale, corporate and online operations.

The Boomers will play the Pac-12 College All Stars in their Farewell Series at Melbourne's Hisense Arena on Tuesday, July 12 and Thursday, July 14 from 7.30pm.

The Australian Rollers vs All Stars will tip-off at 5.45pm.
