The Marksman 'home' as Crocs look for Moore

TOWNSVILLE has lost free agent point guard Steve “The Marksman” Markovic to Sydney but the Crocs have their eyes on American guard McKenzie Moore and remain in the quest to retain Brian Conklin’s services.

Conklin, the reigning NBL MVP of 2014-15, was high on Melbourne United’s wish list but Townsville – where he has spent the past two seasons – still is pitching hard to win back his services.

The Crocs also are well in the hunt to regain 2011 All-NBL second team centre and Kevin Sugars Medallist, Luke Schenscher to bolster their stocks.

Schensch, 32 and 216cm, had arguably his best NBL season when he won the 2011 MVP for the Crocs.

He has spent the past three seasons back at home in Adelaide with the 36ers.

Moore, 23 and 198cm, played his college basketball at University of Texas-El Paso and currently is averaging 22.4ppg, 6.0rpg and 4.3apg with Nelson Giants of the NZ NBL, playing alongside NBL stalwarts such as Mika Vukona and Philllll Jones.

MACCAS: McKenzie Moore...on the Crocs' radar.

Crocodiles coach Shawn Dennis, who has extensively coached in New Zealand, rarely has shied from looking at imports across the Tasman plying their trade in the NZ NBL.

Conklin originally was recruited from Southland Sharks and 2013-14 import Josh Pace also was picked up from Nelson Giants.

Markovic, 30 and 188cm, is a Sydney boy who made his NBL debut with the defunct West Sydney Razorbacks in 2003-04, winning the league’s Rookie of the Year honours.

“It was an easy choice in the end,” The Marksman said.

“It’s always great to have an opportunity to represent the place you grew up, so being from Sydney, I couldn’t be more excited to be back home playing in front of family and friends on what is shaping up to be a great team.”

Markovic played in Serbia and Italy before signing to play with Townsville in 2013.

He averaged 11.6ppg, 4.5apg and 2.0rpg while assisting in the emergence of Mitch Norton.
