IT took some phenomenal play and key free throws down the stretch for South East Melbourne Phoenix to outlast a fast-finishing Perth Wildcats crew and in the process snare the club's second Team of the Week accolade, as NBL Round 13 threw up a raft of erratic results.

Brisbane, for example, could only muster 69 points in a loss at Cairns, then 94 beating Tasmania.

Illawarra staked its claim as Team of the Week with two wins, but in reality, they came over Adelaide and New Zealand, both clubs trying to avoid the bomb shelter.

It was a welcome return to form for the Hawks but not really Team of the Week-type contention.

Melbourne definitely put up its hand with road win at Cairns that was full of merit, considering Jo Lual-Acuil did not make the journey for United.

And Sydney's "great escape" in Adelaide on Jaylen Adams' 3-point match-winner was a thrilling victory.

But for us it was South East Melbourne staving off Perth in a match with direct Final Four ramifications that scored the nod.

When Wildcats forward Todd Blanchfield tied it at 80-80 down the home stretch, it was anybody's game but Phoenix captain Kyle Adnam had other ideas, sealing the victory from the free throw line.

Remember too, the Wildcats hammered South East 101-79 at their previous meeting earlier in February, so this result was not insignificant.

It was significant enough for us to give Simon Mitchell and his crew its due.
