NBL TotW13: Purple patch for Kings and Goorj

IT'S out there now. Boomers Olympic mentor and six-time NBL championship master Brian Goorjian is on the record saying he is available to coach domestically next season. The Sydney Kings - where he coached three straight championship teams - will be celebrating, although maybe not current head coach Mahmoud Abdelfattah.

Naturally, speculation as to where he may land is running wildly but the reality is that the pillow-and-sheet show that is Adelaide surely would hold no interest for the man and that returning to the Kings under the ownership of Paul Smith, plus Andrew Bogut and Luc Longley, obviously makes the most sense.

What will be interesting over the coming weeks will be how this eventual decision affects Abdelfattah when realisation hits home that our national coach and NBL coaching GOAT would be the preferred Kings option.

Don't let the imminent denials deflect the inevitable. Abdelfattah has struggled in his quest to follow Will Weaver and Chase Buford into a fourth straight championship series, or to further the latter's legacy with a threepeat.

He already has felt the heat with management's 7-footers recently questioning some aspects of the program - such as playing defence, for example.

But it's not ALL bad news. There was considerable cause for celebration as the NBL's Round 13 played out - unlucky for some, as predicted - but a joy for a few clubs such as New Zealand, Illawarra and even Brisbane finding their feet.

It made selecting our Team of the Week quite the challenge.

Then, of course, there was also Cairns, unfortunately dropping a game to Sydney but bouncing back to humble Melbourne United for the second time this season.

However it was a split 1-1 round for Cairns, but considering what the Taipans subsequently again did to the league leaders, Sydney's comfortable 101-82 rout of the Snakes won it our Team of the Week accolade.

No, it's nothing like a contract extension for Abdelfattah but it still shows that when Denzel Valentine is unleashed, the personnel here has Sydney in contention for post-season positivity.

Our Team of the Weak as Pi$$ goes to South East Melbourne for its futility in Brisbane.

Yes, we understand it was Mitch Creek's first game in nearly a month but with Casey Prather (hamstring strain) being kept under wraps, the Bullets were extremnely vulnerable.

Instead, the Phoenix again turned in one of those notably insipid performances which fly firmly in the face of heroic undermanned wins in Sydney and Hobart and leave their fans lamenting the inconsistency that has dogged this franchise since Day One.

Then Gary Browne additionally goes and punches Aron Baynes and despite his coach Mike Kelly standing up for him, truth is the playmaking import has form.

It's sad this club goes so close but then just cannot actually consistently get it right.
