WNBL Rd.1 Wrap: A Snapshot

TOWNSVILLE flexed its muscles, Dandenong looked the goods while Sydney and Adelaide lost but were left feeling good about themselves.

Welcome to Round One of the WNBL season.

It started with a thriller in Sydney where Jennifer Hamson had a 19-point, 17-rebound double for the Flames but Perth forward Carley Mijovic had a monster game with 30 points (including 7-of-10 threes) and nine boards.

Free throws by Steph Cumming got Dandenong out of jail in Canberra and a jumpshot by Colleen Planeta pushed Adelaide Lightning into overtime at Bendigo.

Kerryn Harrington stepped up in the extension with eight points as the Spirit ruled.

Grand finallists running in to each other usually is good fodder and so it proved in Townsville where the Fire unfurled their 2015-16 championship banner, then made it three straight wins over the Lynx by opening with a 22-point purge.

Suzy Batkovic didn't go to Rio but she went to town on those who did with an outstanding game.

Melbourne held out a desperate Adelaide by six points, Alice Kunek leading the way.
