In: NBL, Boomers & Opals — Thursday, 4 Apr, 2024

BRAD Newley's retirement from the NBL in the wake of Melbourne United's Grand Final Series defeat by Tasmania, ends the elite-level career of one of Australian basketball's true greats, a dual-Olympian, a Boomers' mainstay, an international star, a stalwart of the game but, and most importantly, one of the sport's genuine good blokes.

A state of independence, a history of success

In: NBL — Monday, 1 Apr, 2024

TASMANIA's success in claiming the NBL Championship within three years of the expansion club's existence is in itself one of Australian sport's outstanding achievements, but then, Ian Davies and his Launceston Casino City won the title in 1981, three years after the actual league was born!

BOB'S CORNER: Our man on the spot in the USA, BOB CRAVEN is raring to go for the first full weekend of The Dance, always the most fun as usually there are some mind-boggling upsets involved, although this year, the women seemed to avoid them, but the men most certainly did not.

Delly meets the moment as momentum shifts again

In: NBL — Friday, 29 Mar, 2024

IN Game 3, Melbourne lost the "unlosable" but last night in Game 4 of the NBL Championship in Hobart, Tasmania returned the favour as Jo Lual-Acuil stole an inbounds pass meant for a cutting Majok Deng, ensuring this enthralling Grand Final would go to a decider, United winning 88-86.

Greg Olbrich, gentle giant, gone at 51

In: NBL, SA — Thursday, 28 Mar, 2024

THE absolutely awful and jaw-dropping news of Greg Olbrich's sudden death overnight while playing social basketball has rocked and will continue to send shockwaves throughout the basketball community in South Australia and further, this delightful human being's loss to us at just 51 a tragedy of the highest order.

Delly needs to chill or United will be untied

In: NBL — Wednesday, 27 Mar, 2024

MATTHEW Dellavedova had us all roaring when he was pushing Cleveland Cavaliers through two NBA Championship series, lobbing balls for Australia for Aron Baynes or Andrew Bogut to dunk at Olympics and when he joined the NBL. But right now he is hurting United in the Championship Series.

LJ and Amoore - the long and short - head Opals squad

In: Boomers & Opals — Wednesday, 27 Mar, 2024

THERE's only two players missing from  the Australian Opals squad announced today for the Paris Olympic Games and one of them is injured so selectors can take something of a bow with this well-balanced crop of youth and experience, highlighted by one big name, Lauren Jackson. Oh, and Georgia Amoore.
